For the second year in a row, the Hollywood Fringe has designated “immersive theatre” as one of the official categories of performance for their yearly festival. This year we’ll be treated to a deliciously broad range of experiences from both familiar voices and first time creators stretching the definition of immersive theatre in a dozen exciting directions ranging from intensely personal and demanding one-on-one encounters to more relaxed and anonymous audience participation within a more traditional proscenium setting.

To better inform the expectations of potential ticket buyers and demystify some of the vaguer synopses presented on the Fringe website, Immersed reached out to the creators behind all nineteen* productions that have chosen “immersive theatre” as their primary classification to learn what an attending participant should expect when attending their shows when it comes to involvement, agency, intensity, and potential for physical interaction.

Based on their responses we have distilled quick, straightforward answers to the questions of whether performers speak to participants, whether participants may/must speak to performers, whether a participant’s actions/choices can appreciably affect the experience’s outcome, what physical demands are made of the participants, and what, if any, physical contact is planned between participant and performer. In most cases, when appropriate, these answers are followed by direct quotes from the creators themselves in order to provide context and greater understanding of the way each production operates and illuminate what makes each experience unique. While every show has been billed as immersive, we have also organized the productions into three sub-categories: “Solo Experiences,” “Group Immersions,” and “Traditional Theatre with Audience Participation.”

Below you will of course also find links to each production’s Fringe page, all related social media profiles, and, in the case of some shows, unique features we wanted to highlight. We hope that this article will help to promote safety and awareness during this crowded Fringe season and guide you not only towards shows you’re already primed to enjoy, but introduce you to experiences you wouldn’t normally seek out. That’s what Fringe is all about! So get out there and support some independent and original works in what promises to be an exciting and inspiring Fringe, no matter what flavor of immersive you’re in the mood for!

*Although they remain listed on the site, we have been informed that both Andy: the Red-Nosed Warhola and HE/R are no longer expected to perform at this year’s Fringe Festival.

Rated 7+

Running time: 15 minutes

Yes.

Yes.

“It is a one on one between myself and another person… done in my apartment.
